In October 2009 the Crash Injury Research Engineering Network (CIREN) in San Diego, CA conducted a study to discover differences between scapula fractures and other shoulder injuries obtained during motor vehicle crashes. These injuries, along with those to the neck and spinal cord, are common in vehicle collisions and can lead to severe and chronic pain.
The Study
The study analyzed 3,370 vehicle crashes and discovered that nearly 12% resulted in shoulder injuries. The results of this study found occupants of a car in a crash with scapula fractures were less likely (5.6%) to die than those occupants with other shoulder injuries (18.8%). The study found that males, with greater heights and weights, are more susceptible to obtaining scapula fractures in a crash.
Ultimately the study called for renewed future research into the role and design of vehicle side airbags, interiors and safety systems to better protect occupants from serious shoulder injuries.
Other Common Injuries
Though car accidents can cause a range of injuries, some of the most common are those that affect the spinal cord, back and neck, called whiplash.
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, neck sprains and strains are the most frequently reported injury in U.S. insurance claims. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimated that there were approximately 800,000 whiplash injuries occurring every year between 1988 and 1996.
Though whiplash is in some cases minor, it can become severe and cause many problems-especially if not treated properly and in a timely manner. Pain is usually localized around the base of the skull, neck and shoulders. Between 15% and 20% of people suffering from whiplash develop chronic pain.
Other common injuries to the neck and back caused by car crashes include sprains, strains, fractures, cervical and lumbar radiculopathy, facet joint dysfunction, and intervertebral disc injuries. Factors that influence the severity of the injury to the neck and spinal cord include the direction of the impact, occupants' height, occupants' position within the vehicle, type of head restraints, as well as vehicle size and weight.
